I've also noted that last year the company had a problem with a particular sensor element, which caused some ellipticals to go into 'pause' mode at random - but this problem has been fixed, and you shouldn't run into this unless you purchase a used unit that was never repaired.

The 1260ef comes with two different ways to measure your heart rate during your exercises, sensors built into the hand grips, and a chest strap. I far prefer the chest strap, as it's far more accurate. Many people shortcut themselves and their exercise routines by not paying enough attention to staying within the right heart rate zone while exercising... I try to be efficient in my exercise routines, so I pay very close attention to my heart rate during exercise. No need to waste my exercise time!

Bought this after reading Consumer Reports and seeing the glowing reviews here. The assembly was a snap. I expected it to be more difficult based on what I read here, but the screws, bolts, etc. are all nicely packaged in step-by-step assembly packing. The unit comes with two heart-rate monitors -- a pair of fixed/built-in handles and a wireless device that you wear on your chest. Both work great. There are varying levels of intensity (resistance) and incline to make things more challenging. The manual needs to be reviewed for grammatical errors and should be updated to match the graphics on the control module, but that is an extremely minor nitpick.

Shipping was a snap. I got mine via ABF Freight and it was great to be contacted in advance (THEY called US!) to set up a specific delivery time. Contrast that with other well-known shipping companies where they can show up any time between 8am and 7pm... if they do show up.

Overall, I highly recommend getting this.

The warranty is a little better than most on this elliptical trainer. You will get a limited lifetime warranty on the frame and the brake. The parts and electronics are covered for a full 5 years and the labor is covered for the first year. This gives you a good amount of protection and the major components of this machine are covered for life, which is always a good thing.

I purchased this elliptical machine for my husband because I had read several reviews that were quite favorable. I have not been disappointed by the machine, although I AM disappointed with how little my husband has used it. The item is quite heavy, so was difficult for us to get to the second floor of our house. Even though we brought it up piece by piece, the main piece was the part that we struggled with. We ended up doing some damage to our wall as we pushed and shoved the thing up the stairs. Assembly was not hard at all. I had read the warnings by others who said to pay close attention to the instructions, so I did. Everything went together very well. The only criticism I have is that there is a decorative sleeve that needs to be put over the neck of the machine before other parts are assembled and there was nothing in the instructions about this sleeve. We found it in the box after we had assembled the entire machine and then had to take apart most of what we had done to get this sleeve on. Look for the sleeve before you put anything together and put that on FIRST.

The machine works like a champ, when it is used. It is extremely quiet and runs very smoothly. It is also very sturdy. There are many handy features. All in all, I am quite please with this purchase.

We were looking for something under a thousand dollars that worked well. Of all the ellipticals that we looked at, we liked Spirit the best. Schwinn was our second choice but we saw Spirit and Schwinn side-by-side in a shop and Schwinn looked a bit cheap and flimsy in front of the Spirit. Reasons why we picked Spirit:

1. It has the heaviest flywheel of all comparable models (30 lbs). That makes it very smooth. Light flywheels can make an elliptical choppy and not fun to exercise on.
2. Dual concave wheels on the rails. Cheaper machines have a single wheel on each rail. This machine has two on each and those wheels are pretty solid. This results in a smoother motion and durability.
3. The elliptical motion does not put too much stress on the lower back. Many of the ellipticals that we tried put too much stress on the lower back as well as at the end of the cycle I would feel a little jerk on the knee. This Spirit does not have any of those issues. Its the smoothest machine of all that we tried.
4. 20 inch stride - It is very important that you buy an elliptical with a stride that feels natural to you. For me 20 inch was more natural and closer to my actual stride.
5. Absolutely no noise of any kind while exercising. The ball bearings are very high quality and robust. A tube of grease is included with the machine and I highly recommend that you apply some grease to each joint during installation so you don't have to worry about it for at least an year.
6. The display and its controls are easy to read and easy to operate.

The machine is very heavy and if you have to take it through stairs, you need two people. Opening the box and getting the machine out is a chore in itself but well worth it in the end. This is the kind of machine that will motivate you to exercise more. Installation is a breeze and took me an hour not including the time to take the individual parts out of the box and carry them upstairs to my exercise room.

I had been using a Proform elliptical for a few years until it started to breakdown. It had a 18 inch stride and provided a good workout. After the Proform started to give me problems I knew it was time to start looking for a new machine. My first inclination was to go with a Schwinn since my parents had a Schwinn recumbent cycle and I had always thought it was a quality product. I read the reviews on the Schwinn 420,430, 431 and the new 460. I live near a Dicks sporting goods and went to see what they had to offer, although they had Schwinn recumbents on the floor, they didn't have any Schwinn ellipticals to try.

They did have 2 Sole models, the E25 and the E95. Once I stepped on the Sole E25 I felt the quality of the machine, the E95 was even better but at 80+ inches long it was not of interest but the E25 was. The Sole E25 was priced at $950 plus tax. I then started reviewing other similar ellipticals and came upon the Spirit Esprit line which I came to learn was made by the same company that makes Sole.

In my reviewing I discovered that flywheel weight is important, the heavier the better it seems, that's the thing that gives you the smooth feel, instead of a choppy run where you exert effort on each peddle on each individual stroke. It's hard to explain until you feel the difference but the flywheel weight makes the difference. Cheap machines don't mention flywheel weight because they don't have it.

The Schwinn's come with a 25 lb flywheel the Sole E25 has a 23 lb flywheel, this machine has a 30 lb flywheel and you can feel it. It takes a little effort to get this thing going, but once you do it wants to just keep going. This provides a boost for those times that you feel like slowing down, this machine pushes you to keep it up, you can slow down on the pace but it takes a few revolutions. I bought the Esprit EL-455 for these reasons:

• It is shorter in length than the Sole 95 and the Sole 25
• It has a heavier flywheel 30 lb
• It has heart rate control with telemetry
• Adjustable footpads
• Back lit screen
• 20 inch stride
• Custom programs
• Made by Spirit who makes Sole machines
• Less expensive than similar Sole

The Schwinn 430 may be better but I don't know since I couldn't test one. The Schwinn 460 was intriguing but as it's new I wasn't willing to take a chance. Once you get a 200 lb machine delivered and then assemble it, the last thing you want to do is have to take it apart and send it back.

I've only had the Spirit for 1 day so I can't advise on much beyond assembly but it wasn't to hard. It took about 2 hours. 30 minutes was cutting the box and unpacking, 30 minutes was trying to feed the electrical wire through the column, I ended up using a coat hanger to push it through. The rest went pretty smooth but I was trying to be careful to do things in order and right because I know that if you screw up the assembly you might never get another chance to get it right.

Upon trying the machine I found it very smooth and quiet as I expected it would be. I went for 20 minutes and was sweating pretty good. I'm used to going 50 minutes, but then I was already sweating from putting the thing together so I'll leave the full work out till tomorrow.

Just a note about delivery, I choose to take the free delivery offered by Amazon, total price was $999 no tax no shipping, they notified me a week after my order that the order had been shipped. Once I tracked the order I found that it had already arrived in my town and was ready for delivery, 10 days before Amazon said I should expect it. The delivery man wheeled it up my driveway and placed it in my living room exactly where I wanted to assemble it. The invoice said I had inside delivery included. I was worried I might have to pull it up the driveway myself because I didn't pay for premium delivery.

I'll update in a few weeks after I put the Esprit EL -455 through it's paces.

Update - The machine does not have or use a heart rate strap and can only use the stationary grips for heart rate control programs. As I use a separate heart rate monitor, this is not a problem for me. It does make the heart rate control programs rather useless unless you don't use the swinging arms and keep your hands on the stationary grips. The machine itself has had a few minor squeaks but they seem to have gone away with use. I did spray a little WD40 on the joints this morning and the machine made very little noise at all. The work out is good, I have set up a program that keeps it on level 3 for 52 minutes. Once I build up some endurance I plan to try some of the programs that vary the level.

Update 2 - The manufacturer Spirit emailed me and now says the machine does use a heart rate strap they just don't include it. They suggested I could purchase one from them. As stated before I use a clip on HR monitor so I won't be trying the strap. After 2 weeks of use I am still very pleased with my purchase, the ride is smooth and quiet a real work out. Still on level 3 but my avg. speed is increasing, got it up to 82 RPM's briefly today and my HR is staying lower so I'll need to increase the resistance soon. Haven't tried the speakers as I use earbuds, so they are really useless to me.

Update 3 - About a month in I am very pleased with my purchase. The machine is quiet and smooth. I have 2 separate user programs, one is more aggressive than the other. I use them both depending on how hard I want to go that day. Sometimes I use the easier program one day and then the harder the next. I set a long workout of 52 minutes so the pre-programs are not used as they are all 30 minutes. I expect this machine to last many years and I intend to use it at least 3 - 4 days a week for as long as I am able. At 52 I spent most of my life as a couch potato, I am overweight but after six months on an elliptical 4 times a week for an hour, I am wearing clothes I haven't worn in years. The best part is that I feel good all the time and I have pride in the fact that I have changed my life around. Yes, I dread starting each workout, I think about quitting early every time, but I don't, I finish, then I feel great the rest of the day.

Our elliptical trainer arrived in a large cardboard box, that needed two people to move it. We had it delivered in our garage and carried the pieces down to the basement and assembled it there. The only difficult part of this was the base, which also needed to people to move - it's heavy and awkward. The box contained Styrofoam which was marked for recycling, and all the plastic bags were clearly marked with recycling symbols. I give them good marks for making recycling easier.

Assembly was extremely easy. The directions were fairly clear and the parts needed for each of the assembly steps was individually packed, see my photo. Some parts are left or right oriented and those are clearly marked with L or R stickers. It also came with all the tools needed for assembly. I put it together in about an hour. NOTE: I needed to tighten some of the nuts after we'd used the machine for 3 weeks. I noticed this after the elliptical was noisy to use, normally it's extremely quiet.

One hint, it's not clear where to plug in the power line. It goes into a small socket near the base of the left hand side, see the attached photo.

There are two roller wheel at the front of the unit and a large bar to the back, so in theory you can stash it when not in use and pull it out to use it. When not in use it's 51" long and 30" wide. When in use, it's needs a length clearance of 68".

The power drive a large very readable and bright display. It shows the type of circuit you're using below very large digits that cycle between: workout time; speed; distance (miles); calories; pulse rate; and watts. The display powers off automatically, and then switches on when you get on the treadmill and take a step or two. So it's very energy efficient.

Programming the display is not obvious, and it's not explained well in the owner's manual. If you want to use one of the 12 program patterns shown follow these directions.

1. Power on the unit.
2. Press the Up arrow until the bottom of the display reads PROG.
3. Press the Mode button.
4. Press the Up or Down arrow to choose P01 to P12, for one of the patterns printed below the display.
5. Press the Mode button.
6. Choose the effort level with the Up or Down arrows.
7. Press the Mode button.
8. Use the up arrow to set the number of minutes you want to workout for.
9. Press the Start/Stop button and get going!

Because there's no motors in this unit, it's fairly quiet to operate with little clicking noises as you move. I can easily use it to walk forwards and backwards, and I can increase or decrease the levels while exercising. At the lowest level, I can go from 1 to 8. If you grip the small handles, your pulse rate is displayed after a few seconds.

Overall I've found using it is very smooth, it's not as bulky as a professional gym unit but it feels very solid. After we'd been using it for a week, I did use the tools to check the bolts and screws were all tight, a few of them had loosened slightly.

I have a two minor gripes: the hill display doesn't move, it's the same whether you do 10 minutes or 30 minutes; with program 3, for example, you always get four peaks with the time divided equally between the four sections. The other gripe is the placement of the water bottle holder. It's on the frame under where one of the big handles moves by. Trying to get it while you're using the elliptical is awkward, I wish they'd placed it on the step below the display.

We also have a good treadmill, but since the elliptical arrived it's been the machine that everyone in the family is using, including the kids.

I am a soldier who has recently returned from deployment. While I was deployed I injured both knees and am unable to run due to the impact. I had tried ellipticals while I was deployed and was quite impressed with the work out I got. When I returned I went out and started searching for one of my own. My goal was to keep it under $1000. I tried many different brands and discovered that not all ellipticals are created equal. Many of them are cheaply made and shake side to side or make alot of noise. The stride is very important. I am 6 foot tall and the 16 inch stride on some of them just didn't cut it. I ended up buying a Proform 160 from the Proform website since it had an 18 inch stride and seemed to be sturdy, however, after discovering how little they care about customer service, I canceled my order. I ended up buying an Image 9.5 from Walmart. I used it for about 3 weeks and came to the conclusion that the foot pedals were spaced too far apart and it put pressure on my knees and made my hips hurt. After thinking about it for a minute it made sense to me, who runs with their feet that far apart anyway. My feet almost land in a straight line when I run. So I set out to find one with closer pedals. Overall I tried almost 2 dozen different machines and finally found the Schwinn 430 at a fitness store. I tried the 418 and 438 also, but the 430 seemed to be the most comfortable to me. The 438 and some of the other brands seem to have a high arch on the upstroke. The 430 was very smooth and ultra quiet. It is very well made and should last for many years. Amazon had the best deal on it and had it to me in about 8 days. It is a very comfortable machine. After all of this I would say to anyone wanting to buy an elliptical, try alot of them, I tried all the ones at Sears, Oshmans, Academy and Fitness in motion. Make sure the stride length, pedal angle and pedal spacing are comfortable for you, after all, if its not comfortable you wont want to use it. The only thing I think could be improved on the Schwinn 430 is a backlit display. Luckily I work out with the lights on so its not a problem, haha. I tried many machines that were between $2-3000 and this one was still more comfortable to me. It is a heavy machine, so get help carrying it in, but you will be glad its heavy when you ride it.

Before I purchased I was most concerned with two things, stability and noise. I am very happy with the purchase as it provides a great workout while being stable and quiet. Below is a review along with instructions for those who are having problems with squeaking.

1. Assembly: Aside from the package being heavy (which is good because the weight helps with stability), it was not too bad to assemble. It took me just under two hours with the TV on. The most difficult issue I ran into was lining all the holes together.
2. Stability: I have hardwood floors and was afraid of the equipment rocking while exercising. I bought an equipment mat (Ironman mat) to go under the elliptical and the rocking has not occurred except for when I intentionally try to rock either by leaning to the extreme right and left while exercising or by doing ~150rpm.
3. 3. Workout: The resistance provides a good workout, but it does not reach the level of resistance you can get with club/gym models. It still gets me sweating, but not as quickly as if the resistance was greater. The heart rate monitor takes a while to respond as it always starts me around 80bpm and then climbs up to where I actually am. I generally don t believe what it says until it peaks and begins to go down/up repeatedly--that can take up to 30-40 seconds sometimes.
4. Squeaking: After only a week or so, the squeaking occasionally occurred. What is nice about the machine is that there are only a few points that can possibly squeak. I already anticipated that squeaking would occur, so I bought silicon lube. The places on the elliptical where squeaking can occur are any point where two metals are touching and moving different directions (or speeds).

For those with squeaking problems:

If you can't determine which joint is causing the noise, then simply lube the main three.

1. Remove the hex bolt from under the hemispherical cap that connects the handle bar to the mast with the supplied wrench.
2. Remove the button-head bolt from the joint that connects the handle bar to the foot assembly. Once done, you can pull the handle bar from the mast and lube the pin that connects.
3. With the foot assembly disconnected from the handles, the rolling leg can be unbolted (under another hemispherical cap) from the flywheel and the pin lubed.
4. Reconnect the rolling leg to the flywheel. *When reconnecting any of the pieces together, do not over-tighten as that can create a lot of friction and be a squeak-point.*
5. Lube the pin that connects the handles to the foot assembly as you reconnect that joint.

It's three bolts per side and it takes about 5 minutes to complete (it's nowhere near as difficult as original assembly). I have done this once and have not had squeaking problems since. You will need to increase your usual resistance as everything feels easier to move for a while due to the lube on all the joints. If this does not stop the squeaking, you might try the pin underneath the foot-hold.

Despite the single run-in with squeaking, I am very happy...

The warranty on the frame that Schwinn offers covers your new elliptical for 15 years, this might give you some idea of the sturdiness of this unit. Few elliptical manufacturers will offer a warranty for this length of time, so keep this in mind as you shop!

This is totally worth buying! The quality is very good and it's easy to put together. I put it together mostly by myself and I'm a 21yr old female with average strength and it wasn't too hard. I did have trouble tightening a couple of bolts, but that was the hardest part, and mostly just because of the position of the bolt. Most of the pieces are together already, the pieces that need greasing were already greased. It comes with the tools you need to put it together, and the hardware is separated into what you need for each step, so there's no digging around looking for the right part.

As far as the elliptical itself, it's awesome.

• It has an audio input jack and comes with a cord for it, and you can either listen to music on its speakers or plug your headphones into the elliptical itself.
• There's a spot were you can set your ipod or mp3 player and it also has a little book stand at the bottom of the console display.
• There's a water bottle holder and it has two smaller side holders where you can set other things like a cell phone or something, which is nice.
• It has a power cord, it doesn't take batteries like some do.
• It has a fan that has 3 different settings and an option for changing what you're looking at on the screen, calories burned or distance and time or heart rate. It has a spot that tells you your rate in MPH and also your resistance setting.
• It measures the distance in miles and starts at 0.00 goes up by .01 miles at a time.
• It has some preset programs, but I haven't used them, I've just done it as manual.
• It has 2 options for changing the resistance level: it has + and - buttons, but it also has numbers 1-10 on the sides so you can change resistance quickly.
• It has a really smooth motion, you don't feel like you're bouncing that much when you run on it and it's super quiet! It's not wobbly and feels really stable and sturdy. The foot pad is pretty big too, which is nice because you have room to find which spot is most comfortable.

The warranty is typical for good elliptical machines, Horizon Fitness offers a lifetime warranty on the frame, 20 year warranty on the brake, and a 1 year warranty on parts & labor.

As you can see from the photo of the display panel, the readouts are easy to see and logically laid out. The LED's show the time, the distance, and the speed/level of the workout. Start and Stop buttons are large and appropriately colored for easy access.

This machine is a great purchase for my entire family. It took me about 2hours to assemble and had no issues. My wife, teenage daughters, and myself have all been using it 3-4times a week for the last month, so we've given it some good use. It's quiet, solid and has good feel to it. I would highly recommend it. The only issue we've had is the speakers are of poor quality, but we just use our ipods with earbuds rather then connecting to the speakers.
